"We listened very carefully to a quietly spoken man, and were amazed with his strategies and also the complexities & enormity of the Lombok situation, empowered with this visit & information we now more informed humanitarian and are thrilled to be part of Endri & his challenging humanitarian project."
For LFC members, sponsors & donors we invite you to join Endri on a very unique & EDUCATIONAL experience fitting a disabled wheelchair to a village child & possibly joining Endri and the family/village for a special lunch time meal.
Most people watch TV and see Aid workers in an African villages with happy black people waving to white people. Foundation Aid work is nothing like what most people think and have a poor perception in how to be involved. So many charities promote westerners volunteerism as a way to attract funding on jobs locals can do for $5 per day. An educational visit with Endri is a great way learn the reality, & how modern humanitarian non profit business works and to be present without stimulating negative impacts. Importantly to note it is illegal for tourists & expat workers to volunteer in Indonesia (without expensive & hard to get documentation) and our foundation could be closed down if someone wanted to use this against us. (There is a long list of foundations that do get closed down, often because of a bolchy approach by western foundation managers, this recently included the international 'Rape Crisis Foundation' that came to Lombok.
The below information is a little rushed, I hope it is helpful & makes sense. Thank you & enjoy your visit with Endri. Kind regards Peter Honey

Poverty Tourism? where do we draw the line? how do we do it with no negative effects?
Smartphones allow us to significantly help without being there, but so much more is learnt from visiting and learning from Endri.
Technology & Facebook for the first time in history allows us to be frontline in real time, there is very little difference between a child who is a block away from you or a country apart - we can do great things now and for as little as $25 train and fund people to professionally help. Many LFC members are well connected too the children & fund many surgeries etc for them. In the past, and in visiting Lombok Westerners would be taken with Endri while he was doing our Food Aid runs. Some donors even demanded that they wanted to drop clothes off themselves and we even had tour companies and hotels wanting to take their clients to visit sick children as a way to raise money. During these visits our posts on facebook started showing many different westerners with the same deformed and disabled children - and these photos would drive more requests for people to join Endri .. however Endri was feeling more & more uncomfortable during these visits. People were posting comments like 'the best day of my life' from the experience and we started seeing we were doing it wrong. Endri in being polite felt helpless to interject as visitors meant well. eg Some visits clothes etc were randomly given out by our visitors with village women reacting likes seagulls over free food.
We needed to change our approach, and to also change who we visited. Endri's days are busy saving lives so we also needed to make visits fit with his timetable, to have a bit of fun and to get work done at the same time.
FAQ's and What to Bring:
1. Contact Endri: We ask all people visiting
2. Watch our Information Video: We ask all people visiting to watch our LFC Endri Foundation Information Video.
3. If you can bring second hand childrens clothes or old smartphones, possibly a laptop?
As a modern facebook driven charity we do things faster - easier and smartphones do this & are gold for how we work. All our children are photographed and when Aid or say a wheelchair comes we photo & upgrade our records on the website etc this keeps things very transparent and easy to communicate this information. Ask friends on facebook if they have phones they no longer need (make sure phones are unlocked and with charges) maybe old ipads, laptops. Small light weight toys and if you are energetic talk to me about ways you could fundraising for specified a child - small money does big things. this.
4. Make a Date & Stay In Touch with Endri?
It is easy to stay in touch .. we all use facebook and facebook messenger is how we communicate .. for $15 you can put a new sim card in your phone that also gives you lots of data for your internet and the coverage is generally good throughout Lombok.
Contact Me on Facebook: Peter Honey (Project Start Up Manager) https://www.facebook.com/petehoney
5. Question: Can we personally hand out Clothes, Lolies, Money, Gifts: Answer: NO ... ???
You must ask yourself why you have the desire to do this - people who thrive on the insistence of personally giving aid clothes & handouts to poor do so for many reasons .. it is often known as the 'Mother Theresa Syndrome' where people get a personal buzz from the joy of being loved liked Santa Clause, some bigger people even feel 'God Like' in doing this - but what are the effects ... would you like to be a village person & squable & beg for clothes?
Charity is from the heart so simply just relax, listen and humbly be part of a wonderful but also sometime a little sad day .. you don't need to buy friends and Endri has high priority children who need this Aid. However he may give your donation to the family often out of sight from other villagers, in the correct way & with Dignity - we empower villagers we don't grow people to be beggars and scammers eg everybody in Bali tricks Westerners into paying for school Fees for children, while the parents pay huge money on regular celebrations)

Blind Orphanage Visits:
The Blind Orphanage, a Place of Empowerment for the Lowest of the Poor:
Blind Orphanage Founder Mahysar's Goal is Simple ... "I train 'Optimism' & teach the children how to keep even the smallest amount of pessimism out of their lives" Mahsyar's blind children can get around a hazardous city, play soccer, ride bikes, use computers (we need to help here), they get University degrees, run businesses & are entrepreneurial just like he was. His goal for each student is to be independent & a contributor to society not a beneficiary.

Why Orphanage Founder & Builder 'Blind Mahysar' is my Hero.
It took a blind man to build a blind Orphanage for blind children in Lombok . Mahysar has a unique tropical Sasak flavour to his music & he rose to fame as a singer musician in Lombok and Bali and put all his earnings into his Blind Orphanage. The Blind orphan problem was huge in Lombok and together with his brother they built this very special orphanage, specially set up so could get educated and empowered as a group. After a lot of lobbying Government and with their own funds the orphanage got new buildings in 1995 (no NGO or western help) and hosted around 40 kids.
Mahsyar's health is not the best and it is our intention to help in a positive way without impacting the children's studies.
THIS IS A VERY SMART SCHOOL: The kids here are intelligent & extremely capable, hundreds of past students are out there
Visitors by Appointment with Endri only ...Why? No one at the Blind School Speaks English & it is very awkward for the orphanage & school staff when people with donations randomly turn up expecting a warm welcome. Owner 'Mahysay & his wife' are extremely grateful for our support but explain that this is a fully functioning school, teachers teaching, exam time tables & a start & finish time. He says "What would western parents think' if Indonesian people turned up to their child's school, everybody dragged out of class expecting a welcome song to be song then 'second hand clothing' handed out in a way where some kids get this, some kids get that & some get children get nothing. We have unfortunately in the past been doing this sort of 'Donating' - children are in tears & the school in chaos.
Why Blind Mahysar insists the 'Giving must be with Order & Dignity'
School finishes after 3.o'clock & all visits must be organised with Endri which is not always easy, (Endri can often on Emergency call outs with his LFC Emergency Aid Foundation ) so facebook myself Peter Honey or Endri Susanto for appointment.
Our purpose is to have westerner friends learn lots & visit with zero impacts
We are not to here train local people to be beggars or even tell them they are poor - the 'Welfare Effect'. eg Often a village leader & village would be left in turmoil as one pushy mother got the best 'clothes & freebies' and the needy mother 'Nothing'. Occasionally we had wreckless behaviour with pushy people who wanted things done NOW forgetting the laws, cultures, religions & traditions that are not always common sense. Some times we had visitors in beach wear forgetting the village customs (I think most the local men loved this) Bottom line is Endri needed to change things.

Endri is always very busy - HOWEVER: Endri really enjoys meeting his supporters & he also realises the significant importance in taking time to discuss the complexities & the enormity of the Lombok situation with our very much valued 'Lombok Forgotten Children Ambassadors' (and how foundations Lombok are 25 years behind Bali)
Endri realises 'Nothing GREAT can be achieved alone' so the whole idea of this program is to have visitors join Endri or his team on a special day taking & fitting a specialist wheelchair to a disabled village child and sharing the smiles of the child safely sitting up off the floor which is all he has known all his life. After a busy educating morning the team often shares a humble meal with the family and / or village (that we pay for).
The whole design is that you & your friend/ family will gain a positive life time experience without negatively impacting on the village & Endri's time. This family is visited only once by westerners who arrive as 'friends of Endri' and are under strict &
ENDRI AMBASSADORS & POVERTY TOURISM … Where do we draw the line,
I am not writing this to have a dig at We do not do Poverty Tourism - We do not take people to see sick and dying children and have noticed that photos with several giving us a very un proffesional image
Endri is always very busy, children's lives are hinged on his time & for him to personally visit hotel's miles away from him simply to pick up a bag of clothes costs lives and takes his focus away from what is important.
